Proper placement of electrical boxes during the rough-in phase is critical for a flawless architectural finish. A common mistake made during residential construction is mounting electrical boxes directly to the nearest stud without considering the final layout of the room, lighting proportions, or the dimensions of the interior millwork. By utilizing scrap wood blocking, builders and remodelers can precisely adjust the position of switches, outlets, and light fixtures to ensure a professional end result.

ADJUST OUTLET HEIGHTS AND CLEARANCES: If changing the orientation of an outlet (such as mounting it horizontally on a bottom plate) or raising its height, use blocking to build it out sufficiently so that tall baseboards or wainscoting will not require notching.

ANSWER: According to the National Electrical Code (NEC Article 314.23), electrical boxes must be rigidly and securely fastened in place. If you use a wood block to offset a box, that block cannot be loose; it must be securely fastened to the structural framing member using approved fasteners like structural nails or wood screws. The electrical box must then be attached to the secured block using screws or nails that provide a sturdy, immobile mount that will not flex when cords are plugged in or switches are toggled.

QUESTION: When attaching a box to a block, how far out should the front of the electrical box protrude?

ANSWER: Box depth is strictly regulated by NEC Article 314.20 to contain potential sparks. If your final wall finish is a combustible material like wood paneling or beadboard, the front edge of the box must be perfectly flush with or extend slightly beyond the finished surface. For non-combustible surfaces like standard drywall, the box can legally be recessed up to 1/4 inch (6 mm). However, framing it out so the box sits perfectly flush with the finished drywall is the universally accepted best practice, as it ensures device yokes seat properly and securely against the box.

QUESTION: If I use blocking that alters my wire routing, do I need to install additional protection for the cables?

ANSWER: Yes, depending on how close the wires end up to the stud face. NEC Article 300.4 states that where cables are installed through bored holes or laid in notches in wood framing members, the wire must be at least 1-1/4 inches from the nearest edge of the framing member. If adding blocking pushes your Romex (NM-B cable) closer than 1-1/4 inches to the face of the stud where drywall screws will eventually penetrate, you are required by code to install a steel nail plate (at least 1/16-inch thick) over the stud to protect the hidden wiring from accidental punctures.
