By cutting rectangular or V-shaped notches along the bottom edge of a board, you can quickly draw the tool across the wet mix. This leaves evenly spaced ridges across the subfloor, guaranteeing precise clearance and effortless compression when the tub is dropped.

Properly shaping the setting bed eliminates guesswork, protects the tub shell from flexing, and ensures the front apron rests flush against the subfloor as designed.

ACCURATELY MEASURE SUBFLOOR CLEARANCE BEFORE MIXING: Always dry-fit the bathtub first and measure the exact distance between the subfloor and the bottom of the tub sump. Matching your material choice (plaster vs. mortar) to the actual measured clearance prevents setting failures before any wet material is mixed.

USE A POLYETHYLENE MOISTURE BARRIER: Before laying plaster of Paris or mortar over a wooden subfloor, place a layer of poly sheeting or felt paper down first.
