When installing or remodeling a bathroom, multi-piece acrylic and fiberglass tub units are frequently chosen for their convenience. Their sectional design allows individual pieces to fit easily through standard doorway frames, eliminating the need to tear out door jambs or surrounding fixtures. However, despite their installation convenience, light-gauge synthetic bathtubs present structural challenges if they are not supported properly at the base.

THE CAUSE OF BASIN DEFLECTION AND SQUEAKING

Synthetic bathtub units whether acrylic, fiberglass, or composite are engineered to sit flat and level. While many manufacturers mold built-in support feet or structural ribs onto the bottom of the basin, subfloors and concrete foundations are rarely perfectly flat. When a tub is set on an uneven surface, minute gaps remain between the support feet and the subfloor.

Without a solid, continuous bed of material underneath the basin, stepping into the tub creates localized point loads. This weight causes the bottom of the tub to flex downward until it contacts the subfloor. This repeated deflection generates audible squeaking as the plastic or fiberglass rubs against adjacent framing and fasteners. Over time, dynamic load stresses will cause the rigid gelcoat or acrylic shell to fatigue, leading to stress fractures, water leaks, and extensive subfloor damage.

THE ROLE OF MORTAR AND PLASTER BEDDING

To prevent basin deflection, professional installers place a supportive bedding material underneath the tub during rough-in. As the bathtub is set and leveled into position, the bottom of the basin depresses into the wet bedding material. Once cured, this material creates custom, 100-percent continuous contact across the entire footprint of the basin.

Commonly approved bedding materials include:

Plaster of Paris, which offer smooth consistency and quick setting times for acrylic units.

Non-shrinking masonry mortar or thin-set mortar, which provide exceptional compressive strength on concrete slabs or plywood subfloors.

Even if an installation manual states that mortar is optional, applying a solid bedding layer ensures that water weight and foot traffic are transferred uniformly into the floor system rather than concentrated on thin acrylic walls.

Always test-fit and level the basin prior to setting bedding material. Verify that the subfloor is structurally sound and free of debris, then dry-fit the tub to ensure the wall ledgers and floor support contact points are plumb and level.

Use an approved non-compressible bedding compound. Apply mounds of plaster of Paris, mortar, or thin-set onto the subfloor, protecting the bottom of the tub with a plastic sheet barrier if required by the manufacturer to prevent chemical bonding or moisture absorption.

Do not rely solely on molded base feet. Even factory-installed support legs can leave thin air gaps on uneven subflooring. Mortar bedding eliminates voids and locks the fixture permanently in place.
