Exterior wood doors add timeless beauty and value to a home, but they require diligent maintenance to withstand the elements. One of the most common, yet overlooked, areas for severe moisture damage is the very bottom of the door. While aluminum door sweeps are excellent for blocking drafts, keeping out debris, and improving energy efficiency, they can also act as a silent trap for moisture. Over time, water accumulation leads to wood rot that remains completely hidden from view until the door sweep literally detaches from the compromised wood. Understanding how this moisture migration occurs and how to address it is critical for extending the lifespan of your exterior doors.

THE MECHANISM OF HIDDEN DOOR ROT

An aluminum door sweep attaches directly to the bottom face or underside of a door. While it effectively seals the gap between the door and the threshold, it also creates a small, unventilated pocket against the raw or poorly sealed wood.

Water introduces itself into this microenvironment through several pathways. Rainwater running down the face of the door can seep behind the top edge of the sweep. Additionally, water can travel down the vertical edges of the door, rolling underneath the sweep due to capillary action. If the bottom of the door is not perfectly square, or if there is a slight gap between the wood and the metal bracket, moisture becomes trapped. Because aluminum does not breathe, this trapped water cannot evaporate efficiently. The constant contact with moisture breaks down the wood fibers, leading to fungal decay (rot) that goes unnoticed because the aluminum bracket conceals the destruction.

REPAIRING A ROTTED DOOR BOTTOM

In many cases, property owners only discover the damage when the mounting screws pull out because the underlying wood has turned to mush. If you remove a door sweep and find extensive rot, you cannot simply screw the sweep back into place. However, you do not necessarily need to purchase an entirely new door.

A reliable structural repair involves trimming away the compromised wood. Using a circular saw and a straightedge guide, you can cut off the rotted bottom section of the door, ensuring you cut back to clean, solid, dry wood. Next, measure and cut a replacement Dutchman strip (a filler piece of wood) from a matching, rot-resistant wood species to replace the section you removed. Fasten this new wood strip to the bottom of the door using exterior-grade wood glue and corrosion-resistant screws. Once the glue cures, sand the joint smooth, apply a high-quality exterior primer, and paint or seal the entire repair before reinstalling the door sweep.

THE CHALLENGE OF TOTAL SEALING

Preventing this issue completely is challenging because water finds its way through minimal imperfections, such as the joints where glass inserts meet the wood stiles and rails. Running a thin, neat bead of exterior caulking along the top edge of the door sweep can reduce water entry from the door face. However, completely sealing or caulking all sides of the sweep is not recommended. If moisture enters the door from a higher point—such as a failing window glaze or an unsealed top edge of the door itself—it will migrate downward due to gravity. If the bottom sweep is entirely sealed with caulk, that internal moisture becomes permanently trapped inside the core of the door, accelerating rot from the inside out.

THREE KEY TIPS FOR PREVENTING AND MANAGING DOOR ROT

SEAL THE TOP AND BOTTOM EDGES: When installing or painting a wood door, you must prime and paint all six sides of the door, especially the top and bottom edges. The bottom edge is often left as raw wood by installers, which allows it to absorb water like a sponge.

USE A HIGH-QUALITY EXTERIOR PRIMER: Always apply a premium, oil-based or high-solids acrylic exterior primer to the cut edges of any wood repair before attaching hardware. The primer creates a hydrophobic barrier that minimizes water absorption if moisture gets past the sweep.

CONDUCT ANNUAL INSPECTIONS: Back out the screws and gently pry away your aluminum door sweeps once a year to inspect the condition of the wood underneath. Catching soft wood early allows you to dry it out and treat it with a wood consolidant before it requires a major structural cut-and-patch repair.
