Learn A Little More About A Homes Main Clean-out Plumbing Line

Greg shows the main drain line for the entire house. Everything that drains from sinks, showers, toilets, washing machines, and other appliances travels through this pipe to the sewer system. Building codes often require clean-out lines, especially for houses built on raised foundations.

In such cases, the access pipe might be located underneath the house, requiring plumbers to crawl under the house to reach it. The video shows an example where the plumber who did the initial plumbing for the house extended the pipe all the way out for easy access. This thoughtful modification saved future plumbers a lot of trouble.

The frame of the house is visible, and the clean-out line sits at the bottom of the foundation, easily accessible from the exterior. This placement is ideal because if there is ever a clog in the main drain line, a plumber can access the clean-out line from the back of the house, unscrew the plug, and use a snake or Roto-Rooter equipment to clear the blockage.

Never cover up the clean-out line. The narrator discourages viewers from placing a barbecue grill, shed, or any other structure around the clean-out line. Covering it up would make it difficult for a plumber to find it in case of a plumbing emergency.

Greg also recommends making a note of the location of the clean-out line and familiarizing family members with its whereabouts. This way, even if the homeowner is not around when a plumbing issue arises, someone else can direct the plumber to the clean-out line.

Bonus Tips

Maintain the clean-out line: While the clean-out line is designed to allow plumbers to clear clogs in the main drain line, it’s still a good idea to prevent clogs from happening in the first place. Avoid pouring grease, oil, or food scraps down the drain. Invest in drain traps for your sinks to catch hair and other debris.

Clean the clean-out line: If you suspect a clog in the clean-out line itself, you can try cleaning it with a hose. However, if the clog is persistent, it’s best to call a professional plumber.
