Conversely, because the top landing remains at its original elevation, the final step up to the landing will be one inch shorter.

The solution requires adding or subtracting the exact thickness of the finished tread material from the top and bottom of the underlying stair carriage. By lowering the entire stringer by the exact thickness of the new treads, the bottom step starts shorter but becomes perfectly leveled with the rest of the stairs once the tread is applied. This foresight ensures every step is uniform and safe to use.

Drop the stringer before installation. To ensure all finished stairs are identical in height, always subtract the exact thickness of your final tread material from the bottom cut of your wooden stair stringer before securing it in place.

Factor in finished flooring at landings. Always calculate your riser heights based on the finished floor elevations of both the lower and upper landings, not the subfloor, as varying flooring thicknesses can disrupt the uniformity of your first and last steps.

Verify maximum allowable measurements. When adding thick overlays to an older stair carriage, ensure that the newly elevated step does not push the overall riser height beyond the legally allowable maximum for your local jurisdiction.
