Upgrading an open-tread stairway is a common renovation requirement for older homes, particularly when bringing a property up to modern safety standards. The International Residential Code dictates that open risers must not permit the passage of a 4-inch diameter sphere.

This standard exists specifically to prevent small children from slipping through the gaps or getting their heads trapped. When retrofitting an existing open stairway to meet this safety benchmark, there are several methods available, each depending on how the original stairs were constructed.

Installing Front-Mounted Riser Boards

The most straightforward retrofit method involves attaching a new board directly to the front face of each existing step. While this approach is relatively simple, it requires careful execution to satisfy local building inspectors and prevent future hazards. If the top edge of the new riser board sits even slightly higher or lower than the surface of the stair tread, it creates a dangerous trip hazard. Should the board begin to separate over time, that risk increases significantly.

When securing the new riser to the front of the tread, mechanical fasteners like screws are vastly superior to nails. Nails can easily pull away from the tread over time due to the constant vibration of foot traffic. For a permanent hold, apply a high-quality construction adhesive along the connecting joints before driving the screws.

Additionally, it is highly recommended to leave a 1/4-inch gap between the bottom of the new riser board and the tread below it. While the code allows for an 1/8-inch gap, a 1/4-inch space better prevents dirt and debris from accumulating, which can ultimately lead to trapped moisture and wood rot.

Rear-Mounting Risers By Rebuilding The Treads

An alternative approach is to remove the existing treads entirely and install the new risers behind them. This is the preferred structural method because it eliminates the possibility of the riser pulling away from the front of the step and causing a trip hazard. If you choose this route, you can also upgrade to wider tread boards to create a proper nosing overhang.

However, this method requires extreme caution. Removing old, heavily fastened treads can easily split or break the underlying structural stringers. If the existing stringers show signs of age, rot, or weakness, attempting to pry up the treads might cause irreparable damage, forcing a complete rebuild of the staircase. If the stairway already features a nosing, the job is considerably easier. You can simply add a riser board tucked securely underneath the existing nosing. When doing so, be aware that standard building codes dictate a maximum nosing projection of 1 1/4 inches.

Modifying Bracket-Built Stairways

Stairways constructed with heavy metal brackets rather than traditional notched stringers present a unique challenge. Attaching a riser to the front of these treads often leaves the bottom of the board unsupported. You may need to fabricate custom metal brackets or install secondary backing boards to securely anchor the bottom of the new riser to the back of the lower tread.

Another viable option for bracketed stairs is the angled riser approach. In this configuration, the bottom of the new riser board is fastened to the back edge of the lower tread, while the top of the riser leans forward to meet the bottom front edge of the upper tread. This requires precision notching to fit the wood tightly around the existing metal brackets, making it a time-consuming but highly secure solution.

Meeting The Four-Inch Rule Without Full Risers

Because the building code specifically restricts the passage of a 4-inch sphere, it is not always mandatory to enclose the entire vertical space. A partial board can be installed to reduce the gap to a compliant size. If you choose this partial enclosure method, always install the blocking board securely beneath the upper tread rather than mounting it on top of the lower tread. A partial board mounted at the bottom of the opening creates a severe snagging hazard for the toes of shoes as people ascend the stairs.

Three Key Construction Tips

Always use screws and construction adhesive rather than nails when attaching new stair components. This combination ensures a rigid connection that resists the daily vibrations of foot traffic and prevents squeaks.

If mounting a riser board to the front face of a tread, leave a 1/4-inch clearance gap at the bottom. This prevents the corner from becoming a trap for sweeping debris and moisture, which causes premature wood decay.

Never install partial blocking boards at the bottom edge of a stair gap. While this might technically satisfy the 4-inch gap rule, it introduces an immediate trip hazard by catching the toes of people walking up the stairs.
