How To Unclog Most Bathtub Drains By Removing Hair

Bathtub drains are prone to clogs, especially in homes with long hair or pets. While it can be a frustrating problem, there are several ways to unclog your bathtub drain yourself, saving you the cost of hiring a plumber.

Causes of Bathtub Clogs

Hair: Hair is the most common culprit behind bathtub clogs. It can build up over time, forming a dense mass that blocks the drain.

Soap scum: Soap scum is a sticky residue that can accumulate on the drain and trap hair and other debris.

Grease: Hair, soap scum, and other debris can combine with grease to form a thick, hard-to-remove clog.

Foreign objects: Sometimes, toys, jewelry, or other objects can fall down the drain and cause a blockage.

Unclogging Your Bathtub Drain Yourself

If your bathtub is draining slowly or not at all, here are a few DIY methods to try:

1. Use a plunger:

Place the plunger over the drain and seal it tightly.
Plunge up and down vigorously, creating suction and pressure to break up the clog.
Repeat until the drain is clear.

2. Use a wire hanger:

Straighten out a wire hanger and hook it through the drain.
Gently rotate the hanger to snag and remove any hair or debris.
Be careful not to scratch the drain.

3. Pour hot water:

Boil a pot of water and pour it down the drain.
The hot water can help melt away soap scum and loosen hair.

4. Use a drain cleaner:

If the plunger, hanger, and hot water don't work, you can try using a drain cleaner.
Follow the instructions on the drain cleaner package carefully.
Be sure to ventilate the area and wear gloves and eye protection.

5. Snake the drain:

If the clog is deep in the drain, you may need to use a drain snake.
A drain snake is a long, flexible cable with a hook or brush on the end.
Feed the snake down the drain and use it to snag and remove the clog.

Professional Help

If you're unable to unclog your bathtub drain yourself, it's time to call a plumber. They have the tools and expertise to clear the drain quickly and efficiently.

Preventive Measures

To prevent future clogs, here are a few tips:

Regularly clean your drain: Use a drain cleaner or a wire hanger to remove any hair or debris that accumulates in the drain.

Install a drain strainer: A drain strainer can catch hair and other large objects before they can go down the drain.

Be mindful of what you pour down the drain: Avoid pouring grease, hair, and other non-water-soluble substances down the drain.

By following these tips, you can keep your bathtub drain flowing freely and avoid the hassle of a clogged drain.
