If a plastic wrap is tightly secured at the base, the water easily seeps behind the top edge of the plastic. Once trapped between the plastic and the wood, the moisture cannot evaporate. The plastic acts as a vapor barrier on the wrong side of the assembly, creating a dark, perpetually damp environment that is ideal for fungal growth and accelerated dry rot. Rather than improving the situation, this tight plastic wrap guarantees the structural column stays completely saturated.

The most effective immediate solution is to completely eliminate the water source. Turning off the offending sprinklers and hand-watering the adjacent planter beds ensures the post has time to dry out.

If a physical barrier must be used temporarily, it should be installed to shed water rather than trap it. A plastic sheet should be attached much higher up the post, such as 36 to 48 inches above grade, and allowed to drape loosely down past the flooring surface like a skirt.

By placing spacer blocks at the bottom to keep the plastic away from the wood, any water that runs down the outside of the plastic will drain directly onto the floor or surrounding soil.
