HOW TO CALCULATE CONCRETE VOLUME FOR A CURVED WALKWAY
There is nothing worse than being in the middle of a concrete pour and realizing you are going to come up short. If you are pouring a standard square or rectangular sidewalk, the math is fairly straightforward. But what happens when you introduce curves?
Calculating the correct amount of concrete for a circular-shaped segment of a walkway requires a specific process, but once you know the steps, you can estimate your required cubic feet and cubic yards with absolute precision. Here is how to figure out the exact volume for a curved concrete walkway.
STEP 1: UNDERSTAND THE BASIC CIRCLE FORMULA
To calculate a curve, we first need to understand the math for an entire circle. The formula for figuring out the area of a circle is:
Area = 3.14 x radius x radius
In simple terms, you multiply the radius times the radius, and then multiply that by 3.14. The radius is the distance from the exact center of the circle to the outside edge (half of the total diameter). If your measurements are in feet, this formula will give you the surface area in square feet.
STEP 2: FIND THE AREA OF YOUR DONUT
When building a curved walkway, you are essentially pouring a segment of a donut shape. To find the surface area of this shape, you need to calculate the area of the large outside circle and subtract the area of the smaller inside circle.
Let's use an example where the inside radius of your curve is 3 feet, and the outside radius is 6 feet.
Inner Circle: 3 x 3 x 3.14 = 28.26 square feet.

To find the area of your specific segment, simply divide your total donut area by four:
84.78 / 4 = 21.195 square feet.
(Note: If you are pouring a half-circle, you would divide by two. If you are pouring a three-quarter shape, divide by four and multiply by three).
STEP 4: CALCULATE CUBIC FEET BY ADDING THICKNESS
Concrete volume isn't just about surface area; it requires depth. To find cubic feet, we must multiply our surface area by the thickness of the walkway. However, you cannot multiply square feet by inches; you must convert your inches into a decimal representing a fraction of a foot.
To do this, divide your desired thickness in inches by 12.
4 inches thick: 4 / 12 = 0.33 feet
6 inches thick: 6 / 12 = 0.5 feet
3 inches thick: 3 / 12 = 0.25 feet
If our 21.195 square foot segment needs to be 4 inches thick, we multiply 21.195 x 0.33, resulting in 6.99 cubic feet of concrete needed for that section.
STEP 5: CONVERT TO CUBIC YARDS
Most ready-mix concrete companies sell concrete by the cubic yard. To convert your final cubic foot calculation into cubic yards, simply divide by 27 (since there are 27 cubic feet in one cubic yard).
Taking our example, 6.99 / 27 = 0.258 cubic yards. You would need just over a quarter-yard of concrete to pour this specific curved segment.

THREE KEY TIPS FOR CONCRETE MATH
ALWAYS CONVERT INCHES TO FEET: Never multiply square feet by whole inches. Always divide your concrete depth by 12 to get the proper decimal (e.g., 6 inches is 0.5 feet) before calculating cubic volume.
WORK IN SECTIONS: Don't try to calculate an entire winding sidewalk at once. Break the project down into simple geometric shapes (squares, rectangles, and circle segments), calculate them individually, and add the totals together.
