Unwanted Landscaping Trails – Problems and Solutions

Homeowners and property managers often face the frustration of people taking shortcuts across their landscaping. What starts as an occasional footprint quickly turns into a permanent dirt path that ruins the aesthetic of your yard and tracks dirt everywhere. While fixing this problem might seem straightforward, the most common DIY solutions can actually create bigger headaches down the road.

THE PROBLEM WITH QUICK-FIX PAVERS

Many people try to solve dirt paths by throwing down a few pieces of flagstone or some stepping stones. However, this often acts as an open invitation. Once a visible path is laid out, even more people will use it. Furthermore, if the path is too narrow, two people passing each other will be forced off the stones and onto the surrounding dirt. This completely defeats the purpose of the path and ends up spreading dirt all over the rest of the property.

BEWARE OF TRIP HAZARDS

The biggest issue with laying stones directly onto dirt is safety. Without proper preparation, flagstones and pavers will inevitably shift. Some stones will sink into the soft ground over time, while others might be lifted up by growing tree roots seeking the moisture trapped underneath. This uneven surface creates a significant trip hazard that requires constant monitoring and maintenance.

BETTER SOLUTIONS FOR LANDSCAPING SHORTCUTS

If you want to solve the problem permanently, you have two primary options. The first is to lean into the foot traffic by installing a proper, permanent walkway. Instead of loose stones, pour a concrete sidewalk or install pavers over a thick, properly tamped gravel base so they do not move. The second option is to stop the foot traffic altogether. You can achieve this by planting dense bushes or shrubs across the shortcut, effectively blocking access and forcing people to use the designated walkways.

CONCLUSION

Dealing with unwanted landscaping shortcuts requires a bit of planning. By avoiding temporary fixes like loose flagstone and opting for a properly installed walkway or a natural planted barrier, you can protect your property from damage and eliminate dangerous trip hazards.

THREE KEY TIPS

ENSURE A SOLID FOUNDATION: If you use pavers or flagstone, always install a thick gravel base underneath to prevent the stones from sinking and creating a trip hazard.

WIDEN THE PATH OR BLOCK IT COMPLETELY: A narrow path forces passing pedestrians into the dirt. Make sure any new walkway is wide enough for two people, or use dense bushes to block the shortcut altogether.

WATCH OUT FOR TREE ROOTS: Avoid placing loose stones near large trees, as their roots will naturally seek the moisture trapped beneath the stones and push them upward, creating an uneven walking surface.
